Room for the river

Since the recent floods from 2013, 2014 and 2015 there is discussion in the UK how the floods to stop. Pay farmers in England for allowing their land to be flooded ? Or other series of small measurements as natural flood management

In the Netherlands the wake up call came after floodings in 1995 and 2000. In 1995 and 2000 quiet some land alongside the Dutch river flooded suddenly, caused by rain, high peakflow and the impossibility of pumping into the sea. So the government created an new style Deltaplan. While the Deltaplan was designed for the sea dykes and dams,  Room for the River is a series of management schemes alongside the rivers. The Dutch have spent the past decade deepening and widening rivers, creating new side canals that provide extra capacity, and setting aside land as dedicated flood plains.
